With the passing of the late former UPAA President and Alumni Regent Atty. Gari M. Tiongco (2006-2009), passed away on the 16th of August, 2020, at the age of 75 years old. The UPAA has prepared a tribute to honor Atty. Gari, the event featured a Roman Catholic Mass; an audio-visual presentation prepared by UPTV headed by Dr. Gigi Alfonso; religious songs by Dr. Ramon “Montet” Acoymo and Ms. Emlyn Santos.
Having been a native of Bohol, Atty. Gari has later settled in Davao City after he finished Economics and Laws in UP Diliman, where he became successful in pursuing Law in the City and had moved to the Metropolitan Manila. As the president of the UPAA at his time, Atty. Gari had generated financial support, which had impacted greatly to the alma mater under his leadership. In which he had received a great distinction. This has included the mammoth cultural presentation in the UP Diliman, one of the late president’s projects during the UP’s Centennial.
In the event prepared by the UPTV, various dignitaries had paid their respect to the late UPAA president, past and present UP and UPAA personages, these are namely:
Hon. Evelina B. Escudero, Sorsogon congresswoman and past UPAA Treasurer;
Dr. Nelia T. Gonzales, past UP Regent and UPAA Vice President;
Atty. Ramon M. Maronilla, past UPAA President and Alumni Regent;
Atty. Reynaldo C. Laserna, incumbent UPAA President and Alumni Regent;
Mr. Ponciano “Chitong” Rivera, Jr., past UPAA President and Alumni Regent;
Hon. Danilo L. Concepcion, President of the University of the Philippines.
